The Australian Halfpenny
The Australian Halfpenny was a coin used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation. The Australian Halfpenny has a Kangaroo on one side and King George or Queen Elizabeth on the other. The coin was first minted in 1911 and stopped being minted in 1964, excluding 1937, 1956 – 1958 inclusive. When the Australian currency was decimalised on 14 February 1966 these coins were taken out of circulation. The Australian Halfpenny has a diameter of 25.4 mm and a weight of 5.67 g. It is made of Bronze (Copper 97.5%, Zinc 2.0% and Tin 0.5%).
The Australian Sixpence
The Australian Sixpence was a coin used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation. On one side it features the 1908 coat of arms of Australia with ADVANCE AUSTRALIA on ribbon. It was minted from 1910 until 1963, excluding 1913, 1915, 1929–33 inclusive, 1937, 1947 and 1949. After decimalisation on 14 February 1966, it continued to circulate at the value of 5¢, along with new 5¢ coins of the same size and weight. During World War II, between 1942 – 1944, sixpence production was supplemented by coinage produced by two branches of the United States Mint. Coins struck at the San Francisco mint (1942-1944) carry a small S below the coat of arms, while those from the Denver mint (1942-1943) have a small D in the same place. From 1910 to 1945 Australian sixpences were made of sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% Copper) and from 1946 to 1963 they were reduced to 50% silver, 50% Copper. The Australian Sixpence has a diameter 19 mm and a weight of 2.82 g.
The Australian Two-Cent Coin
The Frill-necked Lizard has never seen so much attention till it was placed on the Australian Two Cent Coin. Created out of bronze each of these coins is very limited in circulation as many were taken out of circulation to make the Bronze medals for the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. Each of these coin cufflinks is created by hand with a special enameling and resin process which creates these beautiful cuff links. Brilliant in luster and brilliance, each cufflink is unique with no two pieces a like.
Makes a perfect gift for that Australian or Lizard lover on your shopping list! Australian 2 cent coins feature the Frilled Dragon (Chlamydosaurus kingii). Also known as the frilled lizard or frill-necked lizard, this native of northern Australia can grow to almost one meter in length. The lizard earns his name by exposing a large ruff of skin that surrounds his head when frightened. While the display may help discourage predators, the lizard is harmless to all but the insects and small vertebrates that make up his diet.
Australia has discontinued the 2 cent coins. With the last coin having been minted in 1991, these coins are increasingly difficult to find. The coins are bronze and the cufflink backs are silver tone. The diameter of each coin is 22 mm. Both cufflinks show the side of the coin with: A frilled dragon and the numeral “2″. Minted during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
